Uncle Acid and Italian Film

A chilling, disorientating tale of murderous plots and brutal, gut-wrenching revenge. It’s not an Italian film classic. It’s NELL’ ORA BLU, the newest album from British doom band Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats, which has the bloody fingerprints of cult Italian cinema all over it.

The band will perform the album live on stage at the Somerville Theatre on February 7th. And it’s the perfect opportunity for us to screen a trio of Italian treats.

THE FACTS OF MURDER, February 5th at 7:30pm

Pietro Germi (DIVORCE ITALIAN STYLE) directs and stars in THE FACTS OF MURDER, a shadowy murder procedural set in the beautifully brutal streets of Rome.

After being called to an apartment complex to investigate what appears to be simple robbery, a police detective instead finds himself in the thrall of a sprawling murder conspiracy that will send him searching for answers in all corners of the crime-riddled city.

Shot in beautiful black-and-white with a neorealist eye for grit and texture, THE FACTS OF MURDER is a top-shelf Italian crime thriller of the highest order.

4K DOUBLE FEATURE

BLOOD AND BLACK LACE, February 6th at 7:10pm

Before Dario Argento’s DEEP RED, there was Mario Bava’s BLOOD AND BLACK LACE.

At the Cristiana Haute Couture fashion house, models and their boyfriends excel at the art of backstabbing, blackmail, and snorting cocaine. That is, until a faceless maniac embarks on a mission of death!

After the one-two punch of BLACK SUNDAY and BLACK SABBATH, Mario Bava unleashed BLOOD AND BLACK LACE — the movie that perfected the ultra-violent sub-genre that would come to be known as “giallo.”

With a mood that mashes together the elegance of a quiet rain on a summer night with the luridness of a trashy paperback, it’s no wonder why Martin Scorsese once referred to this movie as “an incredible moment for cinema.”

THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE, February 6th at 8:45pm

In 1970, Dario Argento (DEEP RED, SUSPIRIA) indelibly redefined the “giallo” genre of murder-mystery thrillers with THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE—a mind-bending mix of murder, obsession, and art.

A staggeringly assured first feature, this film establishes the key traits that define Argento’s filmography, including lavish visuals and a flair for wildly inventive and brutal scenes of violence.

With sumptuous cinematography by Vittorio Storaro (APOCALYPSE NOW) and a seductive Ennio Morricone score, this landmark film has never looked better in this 4K restoration.

LIVE CONCERT

UNCLE ACID AND THE DEADBEATS “NELL’ ORA BLU”, February 7th at 8pm

“It will be a unique experience for the band and audience,” described Uncle Acid mastermind Kevin Starrs. “People can come in from the cold, sit down in an old theatre seat and get fully immersed while we drag them to another time and place. To play an album all the way through in such amazing theatres is something we’ve never done before. It’s also something I don’t plan on doing again, so we’re going to fully enjoy it!”

Concert tickets are on sale here.
Film series tickets are available here and at the Somerville Theatre box office.
